Champagne Arthur Lelièvre in Ludes: the expression of a winegrower's terroir
Based in Ludes, a Premier Cru village in the Montagne de Reims, Arthur Lelièvre embodies a new generation of Champagne winegrowers committed to expressing terroir through precise winemaking. A member of the sixth generation of winegrowers from the Forget-Chauvet family, Arthur has been developing his own cuvées under his name since 2021, working alongside his sister Ophélie.
The estate works with plots located mainly in Ludes, as well as in the villages of Taissy and Lagery. In Ludes, an emblematic village of the Montagne de Reims, the vineyards benefit in particular from north-facing exposures, which encourage a gradual ripening of the grapes. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are worked to reveal the different facets of this Champagne terroir.
A vineyard approach attentive to living soils
Since returning to the family estate in 2014, Arthur Lelièvre has gradually evolved the vineyard practices, with particular attention paid to soil health and biodiversity. Vineyard management follows a sustainable approach and focuses on limiting inputs, with careful consideration given to each individual plot. Sources describing the estate also mention the elimination of herbicides and insecticides in favour of a more environmentally respectful approach to viticulture, preserving the natural balance of the soils.
This pursuit of precision continues in the cellar. The grapes are vinified plot by plot, with fermentation carried out using indigenous yeasts. Arthur Lelièvre favours a low-intervention approach and ageing in 228- and 350-litre oak barrels, preserving the personality of the wine while adding depth and complexity.
The Arthur Lelièvre range places particular emphasis on the terroir of Ludes, through distinctive cuvées produced in limited quantities. Prémices, a blended cuvée, combines Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and offers an introduction to the estate's style. The winegrower also produces single-parcel cuvées such as Le Belai, a Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay grown in Ludes, as well as a Pinot Noir cuvée highlighting the character of the village.
Through barrel vinification, extended ageing and his work with micro-parcels, Arthur's primary aim is to express the transparency of the place and the individuality of the wine. An approach that will appeal to lovers of grower Champagnes, single-parcel cuvées and terroir-driven wines, looking for precise and distinctive expressions of the Montagne de Reims.
